The Scottish Highlands

This area was subject to the Highland Clearances when the local people were driven from their homes across the Highlands and Islands during the 1800s. In many cases the people were sent overseas to the 'New World'. The Tower on the hill to the South of Uig village was built by Captain Fraser and was where the local crofters, those allowed to work small parcels of land, went to pay their rents.
